Red-veined darter

This picture of a female red-veined darter dragonfly (Sympetrum fonscolombii) has not been successful in camera club photographic competitions as judges like to see more of the insect in focus. But for me it sums up the day when the picture was taken: an incredibly hot day in June in the Carmargue area of France with just enough breeze to make the perched dragonflies wave around on their perches at the top of grass stalks.

The breeze was sufficient to make dragonfly photography tricky, and also to help you ignore the fact that your shoes where sinking into the melting tarmac.....
