Glacier crowfoot

The glacier crowfoot (Ranunculus glacialis) is a specialised member of the buttercup family growing high in the European Alps.

This photograph was composed to show both the beauty of the plant, and the inhospitable environment in which it grows (here in the Engadine Alps above St Moritz). I find that this style of plant portrait is useful to show both the plant and its habitat, but it involves quite a lot of lying in muddy or dirty situations to obtain the best viewpoint!
